About German Education System
Types of Institution in Germany: There are two types of Higher Education in Germany: 

  • Universities including the Universities of Technology, abb. TU
  • Universities of Applied Sciences or Fachhochschulen, abb. FH

Universities are research oriented and it follows the principle of unity of research and teaching. While Universities of Applied Sciences are professional oriented Institutions and they basically focus on Engineering, Business Administration, Social Science & Design.

Intakes & Deadlines: In Germany there are basically two Intakes: -
Summer – March/April and Winter – September/October

Language Proficiency : The basic medium of Instruction in Germany is either English or German, so the student has to take tests like TOEFL or IELTS plus GRE (where required) to show the proficiency in English.

Proficiency of German language is not a criterion for admission however it is imperative that students have at least a basic knowledge of German Language for living & socializing. IELTS - Minimum score should be 6.5+ but some Universities accept 6.0 as well. and TOEFL – 79 -80.

Entry Requirement 
General requirements for Master Studies: Bachelor Degree min. 65 % for Engineering Students
Duration : Duration would be 1.5 or 2 years and Courses are entirely taught in English/German
Tuition Fees: Universities are state-funded, therefore, generally no tuition fees are charged. While some charge around 500 euros per semester.

Study Areas : Germany offers more than 500 courses in the English language. The courses range from all engineering fields like Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and IT.
 
Visa Requirements

Student VISA procedure for Germany

  1. A student visa is required by Indian students, who wish to pursue higher education in Germany and HAVE SECURED ADMISSION in a German University.
  2. Applicants should apply for the visa in person at least 3 months prior to departure. The visa processing may take 8--12 weeks.

Below documents are required for visa application to Germany:

  1. Duly filled VISA Application form.
  2. Passport
  3. 4 photographs
  4. Demand Draft for visa fees  (60 EUR)
  5. Letter of Admission
  6. Mark sheets and certificates
  7. Proof of English Language proficiency
  8. Proof of financial means. (details mentioned below)
  9. Valid Health Insurance
  10. Declaration of authenticity of documents submitted

Steps for VISA application at German Consulate General, Mumbai
1. Account opening in Deutsche Bank: Open an account in the deutsche Bank from India as soon as the student receives the offer letter. Student is required to download deutsche bank form from its site and get it attested by German Consulate General. This form is needed to be sent to deutsche bank. Once the account is opened, a deposit of 8040 is required.

2. VISA interview: Prior appointment is required for VISA interview. The same can be blocked on the website of German consulate General. Student needs to appear on the mentioned interview date with all the documents mentioned. The passport will be retained for verification and sent back after 10-15 days.

3. VISA grant- Student is required to visit the embassy again for VISA stamping on passport once he receives a call from embassy.

Proof of Financial Means:
 In order to show that the student can bear their financial expenses during their course of study, he/she has to open a blocked account. A student’s blocked account ("Sperrkonto") is opened in Germany in Deutsche Bank in the name of the applicant. Deposit of minimum balance of Euro 8040 is to be made with the remark that the account holder can dispose of a monthly amount of EURO 670 for living expenses. It is highly recommended that the money transfer is made by international bank transfer. One cannot send bank drafts, money orders or cheques to open the blocked-account.
